Some of the most prevalent diseases in recent times are hepatitis C, coronary heart disease, and Swine flu(H1N1 influenza).


Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is one of the major causes of chronic liver diseases in recent times. It can cause liver failure, liver cancer and cirrhosis of liver. Hepatitis C is the cause of about of the liver cancer in the developed world. Alcoholics, men, people over the age of 40 are at a higher risk of Hepatitis C related liver cancer.


Hepatitis C is spread primarily by blood transfusion and blood products. Many patients wit this disease have no symptoms and if symptoms are present they are mild and include fatigue, poor appetite, nausea, muscle and joint pain and mild liver pain.


Treatment: A combination therapy of paginated Alpha interferon and ribavirin given for a period of 24-48 weeks is most effective in treating Hepatitis C.


Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)

This disease refers to the clogging or narrowing of blood vessels or arteries due to the accumulation of plague or fats on the walls of the arteries. CHD is one of the leading causes of death in recent times.


Some of the risk factors associated with CHD are hypertension, high blood cholesterol, obesity, smoking, alcohol, diabetes and leading a sedentary lifestyle.


Treatment:  With proper diagnosis and treatment coronary heart disease can be managed and heart function can be improved dramatically. Treatment consists of mainly medicines and in severe cases surgery.


Some of the commonly used medicines to manage CHD are low-dose aspirin, anticoagulants, statins (Statins are cholesterol- lowering medicines), beta blockers, ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme)  inhibitors, nitrates, anti-arrhythmic medicine(used to control rhythm of the heart), and cardio glycosides( these strenghthen and slow the heart beat).



Surgical procedures are used when symptoms of the disease can be controlled using medications and when fatty deposits are heavy on the arteries. The main form of surgical treatment is coronary angioplasty and coronary artery bypass and lastly a heart transplant can be performed when the previous two surgical procedures are not successful.


Swine Flu

This is one the fast spreading diseases in recent times. This disease can be prevented and treated with timely intervention. The most common symptoms of the disease are headache, runny nose, fatigue, sore throat, loss of appetite, aching muscle, diarrhoea or vomiting, shortness of breath and cough and fever.


If you have a temperature of above 38 Degrees centigrade with the above few symptoms it is advisable to the consult the doctor immediately.


The most commonly used medication to treat Swine Flu is Tami flu.


Spread of Swine Flu can be prevented by avoiding crowded places, by washing hands frequently and staying indoors when having fever and by keeping oneself extremely clean.


In sum most diseases can be managed and treated by leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
