Excerpt: … 12 predict the severity and impact of an influenza pandemic, whether from h5n1 virus currently circulating in asia, in europe or the emer-gency of another influenza virus of pandemic potential. however, modeling studies that a medium-level pandemic could result in 89 to 170,000 death. a more severe pandemic, as happened in 1918, could have a much greater impact. there are several important points to note about pandemic, about influenza. First, pandemics happen. There were three during the past century. second, the capacity to intervene and control the spread of the virus, once it gains the ability for sustain person-to-per-son transmission, will be extremely limited. an outbreak anywhere in the world increases the risk everywhere. Third, H5N1 avian influenza strain that is circulating in Asia among birds, is currently considered the leading candidate to cause the next pandemic. However, it is possible that another influenza virus which could originate anywhere in the world, could cause the next pandemic. this uncertainty is one reason we need ongoing laboratory surveil-lance on influenza viruses that affect humans. and, fourth, because early detection means having more time to re-spond, it is critical for the united states to collaborate with domestic and global partners to expand any strength the scope of early warn-ing surveillance activities. In the United States, the HHS pandemic influenza plan is a blue-print for pandemic influenza preparedness and response and pro-vides guidance to national, state and local policymakers in health departments with the goal of achieving a national state of readiness and quick response. among CDC’s roles in preparation for a pandemic, we are work-ing to ensure that states have sufficient epidemiologic and lab…

The tale of viruses and humanity is a story of fear and ignorance, of grief and heartbreak, and of great bravery and sacrifice. Michael Oldstone tells all these tales as he illuminates the heritage of the devastating ailments that have tormented humanity, concentrating mainly on the most popular viruses.
Oldstone begins with smallpox, polio, and measles. Virtually 300 million men and women ended up killed by smallpox in this century by yourself and the creator presents a vivid account of the prolonged campaign to eradicate this deadly killer. Oldstone then describes the interesting viruses that have captured headlines in far more latest decades: Ebola, Hantavirus, mad cow disorder (a terrifying illness created worse by federal government mishandling and secrecy), and, of training course, AIDS. And he tells us of the many researchers watching and waiting even now for the subsequent excellent plague, monitoring influenza strains to see whether the deadly variant from 1918–a viral strain that killed about 20 million folks in 1918-1919–will make a comeback. For this revised version, Oldstone includes discussions of new viruses like SARS, bird flu, virally brought on cancers, continual throwing away disease, and West Nile, and fully updates the authentic text with new findings on specific viruses.
Viruses, Plagues, and Heritage paints a sweeping portrait of humanity’s lengthy-standing conflict with our unseen viral enemies. Oldstone’s guide is a vivid history of a intriguing field, and a hugely reputable dispatch from an eminent researcher on the front line of this ongoing marketing campaign.

SL160 Rapid Influenza A Testing for Novel H1N1: Point of Care Performance (Postgraduate Medicine)" />

Objectives:
The 2009 outbreak of novel influenza A H1N1 reached a pandemic status on June 11, 2009. Early detection is a key factor for management and infection-control practices. Recent studies have suggested a difference in performance of rapid influenza kits for influenza A H1N1. Our goal was to evaluate the performance of the QuickVue® influenza A+B test (Quidel Corp., San Diego, CA) in an emergency department setting and determine the most current epidemiologic trends in our community.
Methods:
Results from 1137 samples for influenza A collected between April 8, 2009 and June 30, 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Results of QuickVue® influenza A+B test were compared with R-Mix viral culture and DFA results. Age distribution and hospitalization rates by age group were analyzed to further delineate the epidemiology of influenza A in a suburban hospital.
Results:
The sensitivity of the rapid test was 77%, the specificity was 85%, the positive predictive value was 74%, and the negative predictive value was 87%. We found a similar age distribution for positive influenza tests and admissions when compared with the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
Conclusions:
The QuickVue® influenza A+B test is a sensitive assay for the novel H1N1 strain of influenza. In our hospital, the group with highest risk of hospital admission was patients aged < 25 years.

Boston, MA (Vocus) April 28, 2009

A new report from Harvard Medical School explains how and why the swine flu virus is threatening humans and describes what to do if the infection reaches your community.

The United States government declared a public health emergency as a result of an increasing number of cases of swine flu, a new type of influenza virus that contains genes from pig (swine), bird and human influenza viruses. Although the effect of the disease in the United States has been mild thus far, swine flu has killed many people in Mexico, and is spreading around the globe.

The infection is spreading in the U.S., Mexico, and other parts of the world. The World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have expressed concern that the illness could turn into a global pandemic. Global pandemics can cause great suffering, economic losses, and loss of life.

In response, Harvard Health Publications (HHP), a Division of Harvard Medical School, has published a Special Health Report, Swine Flu: How to understand your risk and protect your health. The report explains what the illness is, how it is diagnosed and treated, and how families and businesses can protect themselves against it–written in language that anyone can understand. The report can be purchased electronically in PDF file format, for download from the HHP Web site: www.health.harvard.edu/SF.

The 43-page Special Health Report answers questions such as:

What is an influenza virus, and how does it cause infection?
What is swine flu, and what is a pandemic?
What are the symptoms of swine flu, and how are they different from regular flu?
How serious and contagious could the swine flu epidemic be?
What has happened in past pandemics of influenza?
Is a vaccine available?
How is swine flu treated?
What can I do to protect myself and my family?
What should I expect if a pandemic hits?
How can businesses prepare for a swine flu pandemic?

Harvard Health Publications will also maintain a Flu Resource Center web page (www.health.harvard.edu/flu) that includes the latest information on the number of reported swine flu cases, the number of deaths, the countries where cases have been reported, travel restrictions, and other frequently changing information, as well as general influenza information.

Harvard Health Publications will also frequently update the Special Health Report itself, as major new developments occur in this dynamic new epidemic. People who purchase the Report will receive e-mails alerting them that an updated version of the report is available to them, for free, from the Harvard Health Publications Web site.

Swine Flu: How to understand your risk and protect your health is available for $ 18 from Harvard Health Publications, the publishing division of Harvard Medical School. Order it online at www.health.harvard.edu/SF.
